The design team drew inspiration from the famous mountains and rivers of Jinan, applying these landscape elements to the design of the venues to make them more characteristic of Jinan. The atrium, the hub of the building, features scattered green platforms on the facade, enriching the spatial relationship and offering a unique spatial experience.
What sets this design apart is its innovative approach to space utilization. The team analyzed the functional blocks and streamlines, reorganizing them to meet the needs of users. The atrium blocks were connected as a hub to reconstruct the function of the place, dispersing to various spaces. Shared social functions were implanted in each space to serve the needs of people of different ages and interests more widely, providing different scales of communication space.
The design was realized through a comprehensive analysis of the interior space of the building as a whole system. The team reconstructed the functional place, reorganizing the dynamic relationship between the details and the whole. They shaped the space by combining the spiritual, humanistic, and space requirements of different venues, starting from people’s sense of experience and interactive social function needs. Through split, combination, and implant, they shaped the cultural and archives center, creating functional spaces and shared communities that serve local people.
The design team faced several challenges, particularly in optimizing the use of the atrium. They reorganized the irregular space on the first floor to make it more tidy and comfortable, cut off the isolated space on the mezzanine to leave more space for the first-floor atrium, and integrated the overall circulation from the second to fourth floors. They adjusted the position of the escalators, pushed and pulled the edge of the atrium without affecting the circulation, and used idle public spaces to implant shared communication spaces to enrich people's spatial experience.
The Jinan Cultural Sport and Archives center is not just a public center, but a landmark in the community, connecting the future of the city. It is a carrier for the spread of Jinan culture, inheriting traditions and having distinctive characteristics of the times. The project, which started in September 2019 and finished in June 2021, is located in Lixia District of Jinan, Shandong Province, surrounded by cultural, educational, and creative commercial resources. The project covers multiple comprehensive shared spaces, distributed on different floors with the atrium as the core, combining a comprehensive building space with multiple venues into one.
The design of the Jinan Cultural Sport and Archives center is a testament to the power of innovative design in transforming public spaces. By blending functionality with aesthetics, the design team has created a space that not only serves the needs of the community but also enhances their spatial experience. This award-winning design sets a new benchmark for public centers, showcasing the potential of design to create shared communities that serve local people.
